CHRNCLS Retro Highway Attack Challenge T-Shirt

This shirt is something that I've envisioned making since the beginning of the year when I finally wrapped-up my "CHRNCLS: Highway Attack Challenge" project. I really enjoyed the artwork I had put together for the project and thought it would look good in print. I started making poster prints out of it and later decided it might actually look good on apparel as well. I just needed the right printing process for it. I wanted to make sure the cars still retained their pixelated appearance to look like it had been pulled from a 16-bit game but still detailed and sharp enough to make it look purposeful on a shirt. Like I didn't want people to see the shirt and think that the artwork was just uploaded at the wrong resolution, you know?

So getting it all to look the way I wanted it to took the better part of 8 months time. A big part of it was me traveling a lot, another huge factor was me constantly changing the design with new touches, and the manufacturing side of it perfecting this new DTF process. The rest of the time was spent trying to find the right shirt. I wanted to switch to a much more boxier, heavyweight t-shirt with a drop shoulder look. It’s the vibe now so even though the design is very much retro in idea, it’s executed on a modern shirt style. I didn’t anticipate how much prices would rise trying to find all the right materials and assets to execute this how I imagined, but the final result is exactly what I wanted. Like almost too exact. What was also unexpected was just how good the print would be. The detail of the artwork is pretty insane…

Like I look at it and I can spot every single little thing I did to each Civic even after I specifically degraded it to make it look 16-bit. I was worried it would have a blur to it or something but it looks properly pixelated, if that makes sense. Some of the most notable Civics from the Kansai region all together for the first-time…

I put a ton of effort into every piece of apparel I create, but man, this one is IT. I have this idea that I want to keep things very monotone because it fits the image that I’ve curated for The Chronicles, so making something so vibrant was risky for me. Thankfully it worked out lol 😅

*Shirt fits slightly larger than previous CHRNCLS shirts as they are slightly heavier, drop shoulder, over-sized boxier shirts.
